sometimes it’s better for everyone if you have nothing to
say and continue speaking.
sometimes you wander in your thoughts and you tread familiar
territory. you may find it easier to rehearse old critiques of all your
enemies. sometimes you replay scenes from your past that hurt you deeply. all
of this is ok and alright.
sometimes you find twenty dollars in an old jacket you haven’t
worn in a long time, metaphorically speaking. sometimes you take that 20
dollars and buy a ferry ride to who-knows-where. and you may think that you’ll
find the love of your life on the ferry, but instead you spent the ride staring
out the window and see a whale. all of this is metaphorical.
the whale turns out to be the last of its rare breed, but
you never find out. instead you write an elaborate tale chronicling that whale’s
voyage here from antarctica without doing a sclounse of research. you may not
have found the love of your life but you found a nobel prize for literature and
hey, despite the scientists who criticize your work for its inaccuracies, you
achieved your childhood dream of changing the world through art.
and all of this because you decided to wear an old jacket
you haven’t worn in a long time, metaphorically speaking.
